Summer is the busiest time of year at CSTO, with daily full-day youth programming for our Square Roots Program, Teen Program and Square Tech Teen Program. We wrapped it all up with our End of Summer Celebration at the Castle Square Community Center on August 19, 2016, pictured above.
As we turn to the school year, we wanted to reflect briefly on all that we've done over the past few weeks:
Thanks to all who were involved with making Square Roots' Summer Program 2016 such a success. Square Roots' summer was filled with adventures to the Boston Harbor Islands, Children's Museum, Legoland Discovery Center, and other sites around the city. Various organizations offered soccer and tennis lessons to our youth throughout the summer, and we made weekly trips to the Boston Public Library and South End for literacy skill-building.
We would like to give a special shout out to all of Square Roots' youth workers who worked tirelessly all summer:
Group Leaders: Amanda Ruiz, Jayni Samuels-Hall, Jayme Ryan, Stephanie Mei, Sydney Trinh. Assistant Group Leaders: Ivette Alvarez, Henry Yu, Ekran Sharif, Johana Sainma, Tyree Dumasi, Tatiyanna Singletary, Elton Palencia, Joanne Lau.
The Teen Program completed their summer with a bang! Their summer accomplishments were culminated in an exhibit at CSTO’s End Of Summer Celebration. Work from 15 teen employees were exhibited at the showcase and included works such as: Castle Speaks, a podcast created, edited, written, and spoken by teens; a screening of their three summer films; an exhibition of their Summer Portraits as well as an exhibition of their Photographic Stories.
Thank you and congratulations to the following teens for completing the 2016 Summer Teen Program: Cheyenne Chen, Kelly Chen, Michelle Chen, Angela Chiu, Ying Lin “Wendy” Han, Elizabeth Figueroa, Dejalei Goncalves, JianWei Li, Yuqing Lin, Kevin Liu, Xavier Martinez, Yulian Rodriguez, Amy Tan, An Qi “Alyssa” Zhao, and Richard Zhao. A huge special thanks to our Multi-Media Instructor, Samantha Viotty.
SQUARE TECH COMPUTER REPAIR AND TRAINING CENTER
The Square Tech Teen Program had an amazing and productive summer! Our 13 participants not only contributed their time to our Summer Program but have put in hours of volunteer work as well. They have undergone lectures and hands-on-training that has covered the fundamental knowledge and concepts of Entry-Level IT Fields. They have demonstrated their summer training by helping Square Tech set up over 12 laptops with Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2010, building and servicing computers both in-house and at the Community Center, learning to program in Java, build a website, develop business plans, and explored how the Internet works. Square Tech has donated two of the laptops to University Students in Guinea Conakry, West Africa in appreciation of their hard work.
We would also like to thank South End resident and artist, Beverly Sky, for donating a framed artwork titled Orange Peels by Grazia Marzot to Square Tech after having her computer serviced.
FAMILIES, ADULTS AND SENIORS
The Families, Adults and Seniors Program had an eventful summer, which included a mansion tour day trip to Newport, Rhode Island. Residents toured the Rosecliff Mansion, and enjoyed a buffet meal.
In late August, we celebrated the birthdays of seniors whose birthdays fell in the summer months at the Joy-Club Seniors Quarterly Birthday Gathering.
