Teen Art Show: Featured Artists Michelle Chen and Cheyenne Chen
December 5, 2016
Leading up to this Friday's Teen Art Show: Perspectives of Power, we will feature some of the artists and their work in the show. Today's featured artists are Michelle Chen & Cheyenne Chen of CSTO's Teen Program:
Food Injustice by Michelle Chen & Cheyenne Chen
About this project:
During the Fall of 2016, Teen Program Interns dissected various media campaigns that highlighted social injustices. Through the process of media analysis, the Teen Interns worked in pairs to create their own media campaign image for a cause of their choice. These issues were chosen by interest and personal connection to each of the members of their groups.
From the artists:
"In this image, “stuffed” animals are cruelly shoved and packaged inhumanely with labels that exceptionally display “true facts”. However, despite the actual quality of these products being swept under the rug, they are still high in demand and consumers buy into such products without even thinking about where their food comes from. The social justice issue this poster highlights is food injustice. We were motivated to choose this cause because we were disgusted to learn about the origins of meat products and how many people eat it without any thought- and we were even more disgusted to find out how we participate in those acts ourselves by consuming those products. We created this image by photographing the items with a backdrop and editing those photos through Adobe Photoshop to illustrate this issue further." -- Michelle Chen and Cheyenne Chen
The reception for Teen Art Show: Perspectives of Power takes place this Friday, December 9th from 5-8pm at the Castle Square Community Center (464 Tremont Street, 2nd floor, Boston, MA 02216).
