Teen Art Show: Featured Artists Michelle Chen and Wendy Han
December 9, 2016
Leading up to this Friday's Teen Art Show: Perspectives of Power, we will feature some of the artists and their work in the show. Today's featured artist is Michelle Chen and Wendy Han of CSTO's Teen Program:
About this piece:
Michelle Chen & Wendy Han came together and volunteered their time to create an original art piece that would be used for the promotional flyer art and the Castle Speaks podcast art. This piece was designed collaboratively and depicts the two young women's views on power dynamics and the dynamics of collaboration.
From the artists:
"For this piece featured on the promotional flyer for the Teen Art Show, we chose to centralize on the theme power. We collaborated to create a piece that symbolizes power through more than a simple power on/off symbol. In the early developmental stages, there were copious ideas of a charismatic girl standing in the midst of a dystopia or some sort of utopia in a dystopia to show a distinct contrast. However, it gave a dark overtone and a vague understanding and generalization of the overall concept for power.
Instead we decided to show the two faces of power instead of a one-sided struggle with one side that cultivates power and the other trying to cut down power. The tree was used to not only represent how deep-rooted power is, but also represented overestimation of its true size. Our work not only shows power through the symbolism of the image, but also shows the power behind our collaboration." -Michelle Chen and Wendy Han
The reception for Teen Art Show: Perspectives of Power takes place this Friday, December 9th from 5-8pm at the Castle Square Community Center (464 Tremont Street, 2nd floor, Boston, MA 02216).
